May was Rubbish
My birthday is in May, so usually I've got that to look forward to but unfortunately, that was the high point.
I went open water swimming on the evening of my birthday and the next day, I felt tired and had to take a nap in the afternoon, which I just put down to the fact that I'd been up at 5 to go swimming at the Commonwealth Pool in Edinburgh.
I felt terrible that evening and I went to the doctor in the morning, who surmised that I had some sort of virus, and I was to rest. Well, I was forced to rest because that night I was struck down with probably the worst illness I've ever had. It turned out to be gastroenteritis, probably picked up from swallowing something nasty when I was swimming in the Loch.
I had 3 days of fever, dizziness, cramps, pain and "bowel issues". I didn't get out of bed for 3 days and didn't eat for 2 and half. It was truly horrible.
I didn't really recover any verve for about 2 or 3 weeks after that, and every time I tried to train, I was flat out the next day. It took a long time for my bowels to recover too.
So, May was rubbish. On top of a poor month of training in April, my fitness suffered a bit and by the beginning of June, with only 2-3 weeks to go to Ironman UK 70.3, I was getting a bit nervous.
